Brunswick at Hastenbeck

The final contingent for my allied force at Hastenbeck are those of Brunswick which supplied two brigades of infantry. A further two battalions of grenadiers were added to the general reserve.

No cavalry were supplied. It was not until three years later that Brunswick raised two units of mounted troops.

The figures, like my Hessian troops, came from extra Prussian musketeers and required very little modification.

Brigade Erbprinz of Brunswick
Brunswick Behr (2 bns)
Brunswick Leib-Regiment (2 bns)

Brigade von Behr
Brunswick Zastrow (1 bn)
Brunswick Imhoff (2 bns)

von Hardenberg Brigade of converged grenadiers
Brunswick Grenadiers (1 bn)

von Schulenburg Brigade (reserve of grenadiers)
Brunswick Grenadiers (1 bn)

To do list:
I need to paint infantry flags for Hannover (3) and Brunswick (2). Those for Hesse-Kassel are done.

Cavalry standards are optional, but if I am inclined to make them, then I need 3 for Hannover and 2 for Hesse-Kassel.

The following General officers are needed: the Duke of Cumberland, Lt. General Zastrow, Lt. General Wutginau, and Lt. General Imhoff.

The above will be ordered from Blue Moon along with British grenadiers to serve for Hannover.

Grenadiers for the five battalions from Hesse-Kassel and Brunswick will be converted from my “extras” Prussian fusilier figures.

The mitre cap is actually smaller than the British Grenadier cap and can be easily converted from a Prussian fusilier cap by clipping the spike off and adding Milliput to complete a bag.

Should not be long now.

Hesse-Kassel at Hastenbeck.

Hesse-Kassel provided the second largest contingent of the forces assembled at Hastenbeck. These were five regiments of cavalry and dragoons plus 13 battalions of infantry.

Re-painting the figures as Hessian was no problem, as all were formerly Prussian musketeers; blue coat with red facings, white waistcoat and breeches. Most remained unchanged with a few requiring white or yellow regimental distinctions.

The photos show the final stage with flags for the infantry and a general officer.

Infantry:
Prinz von Anhalt Brigade
Leib-Regiment (1 bn)
Prinz Karl (1 bn)
Prinz von Anhalt (1 bn)
Fürstenberg (1 bn)

von Gilsa Brigade
Kanitz (1 bn)
Hanau (1 bn)
Haudring (1 bn)

von Fürstenberg Brigade
Prinz Ysenburg (1 bn)
Mansbach (1 bn)
Erbprinz (1 bn)
Grenadier-Regiment (1 bn)

A further two battalions of grenadiers were grouped with the reserve.

Cavalry:
von Einsiedel Brigade
Leib Regiment (2 sqns)
Miltitz (1 sqn)
Ysenburg (2 sqns)

von Urff Brigade
Prinz Wilhelm (2 sqns)
Leib Dragoner (4 sqns)

Brunswick are the last contingent and those will be posted tomorrow. I have also to place an order for grenadiers and general officers to complete the order of battle, plus some conversions you may find interesting.

Hannoverian Cavalry at Hastenbeck

At the Battle of Hastenbeck, d’ Estrées fielded 10,000 cavalry, twice as many under Cumberland. Of these, Hannover deployed the largest number followed by Hessen-Kassel and Schaumburg-Lippe.

Listed by brigade are the regiments from Hannover. Squadron strength is noted between parentheses.

von Dachenhausen Brigade
Busche Dragoons (4 sqns)
Breidenbach Dragoons (2 sqns)
Grenadier zu Pferde (1 sqn)
Dachenhausen Dragoons (2 sqns)
Leibgarde zu Pferde (1 sqn)

von Zepelin Brigade
Hammerstein (2 sqns)
Schollen (2 sqns)
Reden (2 sqns)
Gilten (2 sqns)
Jäger zu Pferde (2 companies)

Detachment on the Weser
Hanoverian Bock Dragoons (4 sqns)
Hanoverian Hussars (1 sqn)
Buckeburg Carabiniers (1 sqn)

Detachment around the Afferde Watchtower under von Ledebur (Hanoverian)
Dachenhausen Dragoons (2 sqns)
Leib-Regiment (2 sqns)

Detachment east of Afferde under Colonel Dachenhausen
Schlutter (2 sqns) unidentified unit
Dachenhausen (2 sqns)

White coats were generally worn by both Horse and Dragoons from Hannover and Hesse-Cassel. With some minor exceptions this would mean all my extra British would undergo a transformation.

Before painting, I remembered to check my “extra” Prussian and Austrian cavalry if any elements could be substituted. These totaled 35 elements, so chances were good I might be able to save some painting effort.
