September of this year, one dozen scenarios were designed and tested for a
mid-17th century map-less campaign. Scenarios are randomly selected with
objectives set for both defender and attacker. The role of attacker/defender rotates
with each scenario played. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Designed
for the Northern War of 1655 – 1660, the system was later expanded to include the
conflict between Spain and the United Provinces, allowing riverine warfare and the
implementation of field fortifications. This topic is well covered in episode
10, “Shovelling to Victory” in Defragged’s History of the <b>Eighty Years’ War</b>
(YouTube). Well worth the watch.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Field
fortifications or earthen works took little time construct and took different
shapes to conform with terrain limitations and the size of its garrison. There
are a few scenarios which include their use and this past weekend, construction
began with a mock-up of three common designs. These are frequently seen in the
drawings/etchings in episode 10. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Triplex
wood will serve for the bases and Milliput will be used for the ground and

conflict between Denmark and Sweden of 1658, the twelve scenarios were given
another test. This time, armies will be of similar composition of cavalry,
infantry and artillery. Sweden began the campaign as the invader and marched
through the arable region of Jutland during the summer of that year. Sunrise at
0400 hours would give Sweden ample opportunity to locate Danish forces and
bring the main army to battle.</span> </p>
<p>This time,
the tests were played in a random order making for an interesting narrative.
During the month of June, the Danes resorted to a number of small cavalry
actions, however, the frequency of which took a heavy toll on that mounted arm. </p>

research into the war, naval operations around Swedish Pommern did take place. Considering
this, adding littoral to the list of regions would make naval operations
possible and bring an opportunity to fight the last half of the Eighty Years

versions of DBA offered a simplified campaign option in which sieges could take
place. No longer offered in the current version, thus prompted the development
of simple campaign system which has been outlined in earlier posts. In one
campaign assignment, the storming of a field fortification, as part of a siege
had me think of designing s similar system for sieges. The Eighty Years War is
filled with such excellent examples of what could take place. See the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Sieges_of_the_Eighty_Years%27_War">link</a>.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Using 's-Hertogenbosch
(1629) as a model, its walls were complete with bastions, ravelins and the routes
into the city were protected with forts, all strengthening its defence. Streams
feeding into swamps offered further protection, but to the defenders’ surprise,
the streams had been diverted to allow the draining of the swamps. This was
done by constructing dikes around the entire city. work carried out by peasants
hired for the task. A circumvallation of the city protected the Republic’s army
from any Spanish relief, and allowed the Republic to move its entrenchments closer
and allow artillery batteries to be repositioned. Mining operations succeeded
in setting off a massive explosion under a bastion to cause a breach; prompting
the military governor to surrender three days later.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">In this
example, we have a myriad of small operations that can take place on the game
board without requiring massive number of figures or the construction of a
walled city. There are last minute supplies required for the city, the storming
of outlying forts, sallies by the defenders to disrupt the construction of
mills, dikes or entrenchments and the relief column’s attempt to break the
siege and more. Before these can be translated into scenarios, we must define
certain features of a siege and how the rules can apply or need adjustment. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB"><b>Siege of 's-Hertogenbosch</b>

launched its campaign against the Swedish army, in the spring of 1655. Near
Poznan, the advance guards of each army probed the others cavalry screen while
the armies marched. As the armies maneuvered, detachments were busy seizing river
crossing points, capturing prisoners, or shadowing the enemy, moving from one
campsite to the next. The cat and mouse game that developed during the first
month presented Sweden with the upper hand. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

cavalry patrols skirmished, an encamped army regularly sent foragers to collect

delay delaying the enemy for day, allowing the main body to gain a day’s march.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This developed
better than expected. Completing each scenario, the campaign developed a

leading to an open battle.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Few orders
needed amending and when made, this was for clarity of certain points, such as <b>order
five</b>, stipulating the departure of supply wagons, <b>order ten</b>,
defining the protection an entrenched position or ‘fort’ and <b>order twelve</b>,
the addition of peasant militia (7Hd) as reinforcements.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The
completion of each order generated a score for the winner and loser, the higher
scorer was allowed access other troop types for its next assignment. The Swedes
profited well by the advantage in the second month of the campaign.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Three
months of campaigning, the difference in scores became too great, presenting the
likelihood of a Polish-Lithuanian capitulation, Sweden +6, Poland – 6. Historically,
this did happen would be known as the Swedish Deluge.</span> </p>

requiring further thought:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Alternating
between attacker and defender created a nice balance to the campaign. The tests
were done in the sequence listed, but in future a card draw and discard system,
would make the campaign less predictable.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">At the
moment, the difference of <span style="color: red;">win/loss points</span>, earned
one side an extra selection of troops. Further options could include selecting the
start time as both sides begin their day at dawn. A points advantage of points could
have that side arrive on the game board a full turn ahead of the opposition.
Still thinking on this.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Players were
under no obligation to have equal size armies, as long as the command had 6 and
12 elements. Most conflicts were fought between unequal sized forces, gaining a
reward for a smaller force defeating a larger one would be interesting.
Perhaps, extra points could be earned this way, but this needs some thought. <o:p></o:p></span></p><br /><p></p>Timurilankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12856114016218310524noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3844733894926798830.post-40658116615264407202023-08-24T00:09:00.000-07:002023-08-24T00:09:52.744-07:00The Order Table<p>The
Collision Course variant became the benchmark for a series of experiments and further
research of 17th century warfare. Rather than develop another
campaign requiring map movement to force
a clash of arms, I sought to develop a system that would occupy players with
events leading to and from an open battle. Historically, open battles were not
as frequent as gamers would like to believe. This design has other campaign
related events taking place bringing depth to the game. The next step was to increase
the size of armies matching DBA’s big battle option allowing the formation of
an advance guard, a main body and a rear guard, each commanded by a
general. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The
campaign<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The
campaign season, whether this took place during the spring, summer or autumn,
would last three months, between campaigns, time would be spent gathering
supplies, reinforcing the troops, scouting, or gathering intelligence would be undertaken
by detachments given specific tasks. These tasks are outlined on card, listing an
objective, troops types required, terrain features, deployment and possible outcomes
generating a score. The accumulated total would influence the continuation of a
campaign or its closure.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Players
rotate the roll of attacker and draw a card for that game. Troops are selected with
the terrain placed by the defender places terrain and the time of day determined
by the attacker. A campaign month passes when four order cards have been played,
three months will bring the campaign season to an end.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><o:p> </o:p></span><b><span lang="EN-GB">The various
commands</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Most assignments
will involve the advance guard, a few, the rear guard. Record keeping is minimal,
but players will find it helpful to note the placement order of elements in
each command; advance guard, main body and rear guard. Players will then find
it easier to revise the composition each when carrying out a particular assignment.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The size of
the advance guard is a minimum of six to a maximum of twelve elements and commanded
by a general. Troops to be used are listed on the card; selecting elements
listed in parenthesis is dependent on the general’s level of success. Simply
expressed, the successful general will have better options. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOmWPS_k4fXaruflGENSymLHRhyadvyNievjZ3ottp94H-vUwsTnadmX3DbHRxKLad4MSBDnzr5L6q8CVQM43W5p_Gnr-hCFmubL8yZlkfR8cRpEyO25w36U5ytqFb_IVpV6tgM6deqJLj6esUcvSLnJndyB5ontRlqjTwdx99MLvb_RDoVBvCiWpQn6o/s4608/IMG_6609.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOmWPS_k4fXaruflGENSymLHRhyadvyNievjZ3ottp94H-vUwsTnadmX3DbHRxKLad4MSBDnzr5L6q8CVQM43W5p_Gnr-hCFmubL8yZlkfR8cRpEyO25w36U5ytqFb_IVpV6tgM6deqJLj6esUcvSLnJndyB5ontRlqjTwdx99MLvb_RDoVBvCiWpQn6o/s320/IMG_6609.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><b><span lang="EN-GB"><p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-GB"><br /></span></b></p>Terrain</span></b><p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The
collision course method of deploying columns is used, replacing the standard
deployment of DBA3. The distance between entry points is noted for the
placement of columns one and two, the third is brought on after column two is
completely on table. This costs 4 pips to enter and score of six will make its
placement immediate. There are some instances that have the defender deploy his
troops in the centre of the board. </span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Time<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">A standard playing
card pack (1 – 10) is used to determine the elapsed time of each turn. At the
completion of the attacker’s bound, a card is drawn. This is done each turn
until the score is reached, bringing the encounter to a close. The score is
calculated as the number of daylight hours for that season, times four. As an
example, a campaign starting in Spring will have daylight between 0500 and
1900. Fourteen hours times four gives us a score of 56. It is possible, a side will
not achieve its assignment, lacking sufficient time. This could have
consequences. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

the collision course variant, the next series of tests bring larger armies to
the game table, somewhat equalling a big battle option in DBA3. Thirty-six elements
are grouped in three commands representing a vanguard, main column and rear
guard. This is not a permanent organisation, but the strength and composition for
each command may vary according to the circumstances imposed on the army. As an
example, an army encamped will send its vanguard to perform one of a number of
tasks independent of the main force, alternatively, an army on the march may require
its vanguard to secure key locations ahead of the main body. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Determining
what action may be taken, the player will consult the Order Table before the
start of the game. Each player casts one die to determine the objective for the
army’s vanguard, this may differ from the opposing vanguard. The subsequent contact
between advance forces may, time permitted, escalate to a full battle and using
the die result and card system will determine when a day’s end has been
reached.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This method
will help build a campaign experience without the use of maps as each order
will present sufficient information regarding time, terrain pieces and an
objective to be reached. For example, an order may require an invader to secure
a vital river crossing, enabling the passage of the main body to its next destination.
To execute this, the player may revise the composition of the vanguard to include
infantry to secure and hold a bridgehead and some cavalry to support the
operation. The opposing player may have similar designs on a river crossing or
may have orders to engage enemy cavalry screening an army. The ensuing combat could
have interesting results.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The order
table will require fleshing out and preliminary tests will generate other
possibilities. In the meantime, both armies are encamped and preparing for the
start of the campaign.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">In the <b>Swedish</b>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">As

day two having ample time for a battle. Below is a brief description of the
system.</span> </p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">0800 to

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">1600 to

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Our
campaign season began in late Autumn with daylight lasting on average 14 hours.
The time of the encounter is determined by both players casting a die, the total
equals the elapsed time from departing camp to first contact. In our case, a
score of five placed the encounter at 10.00, leaving nine hours (36 turns) of
daylight. At the end of each attacker’s bound a playing card (no face cards) is
drawn to determine the amount ‘turns’ that have passed. This is done each turn
until the total reaches or surpasses 36, thus ending the day’s encounter.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This system
offers players an interesting option to the traditional set piece game. Multiple
day battles can be easily simulated with casualties carried forward adding an
extra level of tension to the next engagement. Larger armies of two or three
commands can mix troop types for their three columns with each column commanded
by a general. ‘Collision Course’ variant has added an extra level of enjoyment to our ancient
and medieval games, it was decided to apply this to the gunpowder era. In
brief, collision course replaces the standard deployment of troops and have
armies approach one another in column formation. The army, divided in three
columns including the mobile baggage, scrambles to form line to meet the enemy.
This has been played using ancient and medieval armies on a number of occasions
to our enjoyment. Games do run longer, as forming line from columns may lack
space to deploy properly or columns may take longer to appear on the field. The
decision to attack an unready enemy is a double edge sword, as one may find
themselves without support and unable to sustain their combats.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">To test the
Collision Course variant, two armies are used from an upcoming project, the
Second Northern War of 1655; the Polish-Lithuanian versus the Swedes (French
proxy for the Northmen). <o:p></o:p></span></p>

thoughts.</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">From Phil
Barker, “Play is in alternate bounds. These do not represent fixed arbitrary
divisions of time, but instead reflect the initiative and response by the two
sides. However, dividing known battle duration by the number of discrete phases
that can be identified produce consistent enough results for us to define a
pair of bounds as equivalent of 15 minutes of real life”.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">In the
house rules section of the Fanaticus Forum, a number of useful suggestions can
be found which address the issue of time and one such was used for our Battle
of Mortimer, 1054.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">To reflect
the duration between ‘discrete phases’, playing cards were used to determine
the period time between a pair of bounds. When the numeric total has reached a
set score, the battle ceases as nightfall has taken place. In this manner, battles
may resume the following day with the first encounter resulting in a skirmish
or probing action.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The card
system will be integrated with the next test. <o:p></o:p></span></p>Timurilankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12856114016218310524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3844733894926798830.post-11983198387637005922022-05-21T00:54:00.001-07:002022-06-02T00:01:04.545-07:00A Chinese Village<p>Hot on the
heels of my last construction project (a medieval village), I began the
construction of another, this time a Chinese village. Of the 146 DBA armies in
the collection, not one is from an Asian country, however, among the gunpowder
collection I own two; one Imperial and Chinese rebellion troops. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The construction
followed similar steps as with the medieval structures, however an extra
session was needed for the decorative trimming, characteristic of Chinese
architecture. To research the style of architecture, I divided my search between
rural and city dwellings and found most did have a pronounced ridge on top with
similar trimming along the gable. Not all displayed the upturned corners. The
last link provided an in depth look at the hierarchy in roofs.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

the final campaign to capture Warsaw. This would require Swedish troops
garrisoning parts of northern Poland leave to join the main army. Those
strong-points formerly held by Swedish troops would be replaced with troops from

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 12pt;"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The conflict escalates </span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 12pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">What began as a simple reconnaissance
escalated into a heated conflict from which the Poles found difficult to
extricate themselves. Taking advantage of the favourable outcome, the Elector
of Brandenburg, Frederick Willem, despatched more troops to his second in
command, von Sparr, to engage the Poles once again. A second ‘victory’ just might
prompt the allies of the Poles to return to the Crimea. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 12pt;"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Battle </span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 12pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">From their shallow crescent formation extending
beyond the Brandenburg battle line, von Sparr deduced the Polish had also
received more cavalry reinforcements. Breaking the long line of horse, the
Polish artillery in centre were supported by a small contingent of infantry,
but nowhere else were there any infantry to be seen. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top: 12pt;"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">To fend off possible encirclement, Brandenburg and Prussian infantry
were evenly divided to cover both flanks, leaving the majority of cavalry to
form three echelons in centre. This was a diversion from the standard
deployment of cavalry on the flanks of an infantry battle line.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottoman Empire experienced a steady
decline punctuated by numerous political, social and economic changes. Equally
affected, the Ottoman military had long been dominated by a strong cavalry
presence, but the Timar system could no longer sustain its expense. Subsequent
losses against West European armies forced the Ottoman military to replace the
ranks of feudal sipahis with musket armed infantry. The changes affected a previous
ratio of 3:1 (mounted to foot) to a near equal number by the late 17th
century. </p><p> </p>

been added to the collection of late 17th century armies and thinking of possible
enemies to collect I found them not present among the list of armies in the <b>DBA-HX3
</b>variant. That will slowly be rectified and below you will find the Cossacks are
listed here. The Don Cossacks has the option to field more cavalry, nonetheless,
musket armed infantry remains the backbone of those listed here. I had pondered
the addition of war wagons to the list, but these may be integral to a Cossack
encampment. If so used, then suggest counting their number as part of an army
total. The Ottoman Turks and Tatars will follow next week. </p><p>Any

moment, the French and Imperial armies make the bulk of my late 17th
century collection. however, recent orders with Legio Heroica have now added the Polish to that list. The figures were separated in four batches for painting, offering time between batches for some research. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Polish
infantry and guns<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">By the later half of the 17th century, the Polish infantry organised their shot and pike in a similar manner as their western counterparts. Pictured here are two battalions and plans are made to double the number with militia and mercenary units adding another four units. The Polish infantry wear a blue top coat leaving other colours for mercenaries and foreign troops serving with the Polish Commonwealth forces. </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Dragoons are still regarded as mounted infantry and would not attain a level of proficiency classing them as battlefield cavalry until the end of the century. Units of dragoons would often be found supporting the artillery during battle. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal">During this time, cavalry make up the majority of Polish forces with infantry and artillery forming a support role. At the Battle of Vienna (1683), 20 regiments of infantry accounted for a third of the Polish force led by John III Sobieski. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">By the

Pancerni (armoured cavalry) to distinguish them from rebel Cossacks. The Pancerni
were equipped just like Cossack cavalry (firearms, sabres, sometimes bows) but wore
chainmail and the distinguishing misiurka helmet. The shield may have disappeared during the latter
part of the century. Formed in rotas of 60 to 200 men, two such formations
would support a rota of winged hussars forming a “banner” of cavalry. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

received high priority these past months, for which both ancient and gunpowder
era armies will benefit greatly. Concerning the latter, I brought the gunpowder
era collections to a manageable number by selling off armies that had not seen
usage for several years. This narrows the period to late 17th
century, Seven Years War and the Peninsular War. The new game mats will see a
renewed use of the armies and below is an overview of what is planned for each.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-GB">Late 17th
century</span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">This remains
a favourite of my gunpowder and principally centred on the armies of France
and the Imperial Hapsburg, I would like to expand this to include other conflicts
that took place in western Europe at this time. Adding more armies is not in
the planning as that would be time consuming, however – there is another solution.
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">“<a href="http://dbagora.blogspot.com/2020/12/stretching-collection.html">Stretching the collection</a>” was a project I did for the late medieval
collection. This period saw improvement in armour which dispensed with shields
and caparisons also disappeared for battlefield cavalry, leaving flags and
banners as sole recognition of friend or foe. To stretch the collection,
banners and flags were made interchangeable, thereby doubling the number of possible
armies. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">In essence,
the same holds true for the late 17th century, as nations raised standing
armies, troops began to take a uniform appearance with red, blue and white or
grey being frequently selected. The new flags will be made interchangeable allowing
me to organise armies for the smaller German states, Portugal, Spain, Sweden
and Denmark in addition to France and the Empire. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">Photo archive</span></span> </b></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><o:p></o:p></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjlHjccb4lQJHy-0ez31exDCoCQrgZ4HuYGDg0LyJ9zMfKjc_cmbDVGIf-nK0QIj25Lwjko13YHuvVgFXz5HBnXFb448bUhuHbYFQkXJqwIkhHDr5sj27-p-QkJXPvjXqGwJxGMDK8xPBzsm7nMdj6rCZ-minm0Do8Mb4_jVdaCYVuGT8MFMePIkFt1=s4608" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjlHjccb4lQJHy-0ez31exDCoCQrgZ4HuYGDg0LyJ9zMfKjc_cmbDVGIf-nK0QIj25Lwjko13YHuvVgFXz5HBnXFb448bUhuHbYFQkXJqwIkhHDr5sj27-p-QkJXPvjXqGwJxGMDK8xPBzsm7nMdj6rCZ-minm0Do8Mb4_jVdaCYVuGT8MFMePIkFt1=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Seven
Years War<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The Prussian,
Austrian, French and Allied armies were collected with two battles in mind,
Prague, June 1757 and Hastenbeck July 1757. Every battalion and cavalry
regiment are represented for each army, but these two battles were never
fought. This may be the year for it to happen.</span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The
Peninsular War <o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Readers may
recall a number of engagements which followed the French invasion of Northern
Portugal ending with the capture of Oporto. The siege and capture of Oporto did
not take place as attention was drawn to building the Spanish Army of Del
Parque. That has been completed, however, due to a shortage of suitable terrain,
neither campaign could move forward. A proper game mat is no longer a problem, next
step, new buildings must be added.</span> </p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Part of the
gunpowder era includes a fantasy side; an 18th century Melnibonean
army. Creating a world, bringing their old nemesis, the Orcs and few others,
needed a background story of how this all came about. This may help the reader,
but is primarily designed to develop new projects for the fantasy world. Naval
contingents are being constructed for which a sea mat has been made and there
is more on the drawing board. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>Timurilankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12856114016218310524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3844733894926798830.post-50109890939039704352022-01-20T00:16:00.004-08:002022-01-20T00:16:54.037-08:00Terrain mats <p>Hobby wise,
these past two years were spent refurbishing old collections and for the most
part these were ancient, medieval and fantasy collections. Terrain mats are now
the final part of the project.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The
work table is 160cm x 80cm and is used for games and this project would produce several mats representing the most common ground for the armies; Desert/arid, Mediterranean and
Temperate. The material used for the terrain mats is identical to those used
for roads, rivers, hills and area templates. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

Of the four terrain mats to be constructed, this is
the easiest to make and will serve as a benchmark. This will require no grass as there are assorted scatter material to bring colour to the table. </p><p><b>The ground</b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">One, a base
coat of <span style="color: red;">white</span>.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Two, the
desert colour was made mixing <span style="color: red;">Warm Grey </span>and <span style="color: red;">White</span>.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Three,
after drying overnight, I mixed <span style="color: red;">Warm Grey </span>and <span style="color: red;">Black</span>, diluted the mixture and applied this sparingly
with a sponge to bring variation to the ground.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Four, lighten
further the mix of <span style="color: red;">White </span>with <span style="color: red;">Warm Grey</span>, this was diluted and applied in the same
method as step three. Use a moist feathered sponge to soften the edges of your
paint.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">No grass
was applied, as scatter material would suffice to bring extra colour to the
terrain. The hills were painted in a darker shade than was used above,
unfortunately, the photos do not show this well, but there is contrast.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Terrain items, such as hills and templates were made during this project. I also took the opportunity to re-base two villages to conform with the colour scheme. Future
terrain projects will include a dry river bed<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>and a few ruins.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi-3M5C_90y_qcGvPESeUGsJTj3YzWiWlEF8KlDxYvLJynvNim-tppJHuhASnYCEdFYdsZDQ7RyuiQmoJa9w5mjK8lTnm9vVFfdE44JGzUixJD9GCIqs-RRORbNL5SxonPEntGSTEE6hg1dVgnL-w6WSutjUZ-qD-yyWBkpDBmGElj0aEq9ewo3z2HW=s4608" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi-3M5C_90y_qcGvPESeUGsJTj3YzWiWlEF8KlDxYvLJynvNim-tppJHuhASnYCEdFYdsZDQ7RyuiQmoJa9w5mjK8lTnm9vVFfdE44JGzUixJD9GCIqs-RRORbNL5SxonPEntGSTEE6hg1dVgnL-w6WSutjUZ-qD-yyWBkpDBmGElj0aEq9ewo3z2HW=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span><p></p>Timurilankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12856114016218310524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3844733894926798830.post-23580291787727639832022-01-18T00:05:00.000-08:002022-01-18T00:05:38.222-08:00Mediterranean terrain mat <p>The
Mediterranean terrain mat was constructed on an existing mat. This meant removing what grass remained from the surface as was done in the test example. The same process was needed on a number of terrain items. These will be added to the new items exclusive for this terrain mat.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><b>The ground</b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Step one, a
base coat of <span style="color: red;">white</span>.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Step two,
the ground colour used <span style="color: red;">Warm Grey </span>straight from
the tube.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Three,
after drying overnight, I mixed <span style="color: red;">Warm Grey </span>and <span style="color: red;">Burnt Sienna</span>, diluted the mixture and applied this
sparingly with a sponge to bring variation to the ground.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Four,
adding a bit of <span style="color: red;">Black</span> with <span style="color: red;">Warm Grey</span>, this was diluted and applied in the same
method as step three. Use a moist feathered sponge to soften the edges of your
paint.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><b>The grass</b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The complete mat was sprayed with a diluted white glue; best result is to set the nozzle for a fine spray. The grass is from Busch, an autumn mixture, and to distribute this evenly, I used the large sieve and gradually built up the density in random areas to create variety. Wait a day or two before sealing the grass with diluted white glue. <o:p></o:p></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg5h-cVG16GS2MZ2o1HsTU7E3KXXYwTYK-16SvYW6JPKzWSP-3ejXCSvhK9T1WdrQ-0szmYwKT0K1owbJL-_FXzSgHl1Va1fkaFO0MKsXGttSET8yyCl0EfrAZiWEPww_uw-XnaiMaX03-kJEJIVq4IJnyNdr1Ct7r3qDtCTfzVEj03SfunM_5XkeFw=s4608" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEg5h-cVG16GS2MZ2o1HsTU7E3KXXYwTYK-16SvYW6JPKzWSP-3ejXCSvhK9T1WdrQ-0szmYwKT0K1owbJL-_FXzSgHl1Va1fkaFO0MKsXGttSET8yyCl0EfrAZiWEPww_uw-XnaiMaX03-kJEJIVq4IJnyNdr1Ct7r3qDtCTfzVEj03SfunM_5XkeFw=s320" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p class="MsoNormal"><br /></p>Timurilankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12856114016218310524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3844733894926798830.post-10386256851147643542022-01-17T00:17:00.006-08:002022-01-17T00:17:48.012-08:00Temperate Terrain mat <p>This game
mat will have the most usage and therefore will require a little more thought with its construction. Together with the mat, new terrain items were also made to give the whole a consistent quality. For this mat, the ground colour needed to be darker and this was done by classic
means, mixing Burnt Sienna and Green (earth colour).</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><b>The ground</b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Step one, a
base coat of <span style="color: red;">white</span>.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Step two,
the brown earth colour was made with mix of <span style="color: red;">Burnt
Sienna </span>and <span style="color: red;">Green</span>. Adding a small amount
of water, this was applied with a roller.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Three,
after drying overnight, I repeated the mix <span style="color: red;">Burnt Sienna
</span>and<span style="color: red;"> Green</span>, added some <span style="color: red;">Black</span> to darken the shade, diluted this and applied
this sparingly with a sponge to bring variation to the ground.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Four, to
highlight the ground, I used <span style="color: red;">Warm Grey</span>, dilute
and apply in the same method as step three. Use a moist feathered sponge to
soften the edges of your paint.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><b>The grass</b><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Six, after
drying overnight, tap the excess grass off before applied the next layer. Spray

of the war council reached its end giving the emperor the moment to recapitulate
a number of key points. Plans for the upcoming campaign had taken shape and the
objectives were clearly detailed for the admirals and generals present. The
campaign against the Southland tribes was set for early next year and to ensure
efficient coordination of land and sea forces, training exercises were
scheduled for next month on the island of Hador. The emperor would be present for
the final day which meant we too would be present.” </span></i></p><p><i><span lang="EN-GB"><br /></span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Arms
akimbo, the professor listened patiently to his student’s report, each presenting
their findings, albeit sprinkled with much speculation and theories. Map coordinates
did correspond to known geographical locations on earth, yet sketches and maps
showed a different land mass, leaving Gerard to suggest this may be the result
of tectonic plates shifting in other directions or the result of volcanic
activity and melting snows of an ice age? <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Thanking
them on the amount of work done, the professor now asked them to focus their
efforts on one particular question. The disparity of development between the
northern and southern lands was apparent from their research, but the two
realms paled in comparison to the rapid evolution of the Elven realm. This begs
the question, ‘how were they able to maintain their secrecy while advancing their
civilization, spread over a dozen islands? Explain their technological
superiority over the northern and southern realms? Was there any mention in the
journal of travel between places and times?” adding “If so, how was this
accomplished, surely, this was not achieved through magic?”<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><br /></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">“During
the maneuverers of final day, Arundel made rough sketches of the flying marvels
and added a rough map of the Southland territory between the written passages. A
shadow fell on his writing and glancing over his shoulder he noted a slender
figure behind him and ceased writing. <o:p></o:p></span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The
onlooker, with a hint of a smile said, “There is more yet to come.” <o:p></o:p></span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Just
then the sound of horns and drums followed by the roar from tens of thousands
drew Arundel’s attention away, as this signalled the appearance of the emperor.
Glancing back over his shoulder, the veiled figure was nowhere to be seen. <o:p></o:p></span></i></p><p class="MsoNormal"><i><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><br /></span></i></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Martin
advanced the screen to another passage dated the 125th day, year
1649; “Forces exploring the Southern Waste lands met roving warbands and after
a brief encounter, defeated the enemy. Survivors fled into the dense jungle
making pursuit hazardous.” Reading this, Gerard began to imagine the conflict between
the elves and their old arch-enemy, the green-skins. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

another deep pool of water missed and now both feet were totally soaked. Moving
up the stairs of the university library was not made easy in wet socks, but
getting out of the downpour was paramount. Passing through the doors of the
foyer and threading his way through two corridors to descend one level he
reached the meeting room located in the basement. Entering, he was greeted by friends
sitting at one of the large tables.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">“Sorry I’m
late, but the heavy rain has delayed much of the city’s public transport, but I
brought some things you will be interested to see.”<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">“Great” and
replied Martin with a wave of his hand reset the privacy barrier so as not to
disturb others engaged with their own research. Activating the viewing screens,
Martin pushed past a number of screens to point his finger at one particular
line. “Here, you must read this.”</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">It had been
eight days ago that Gerard, Martin and Hermann, graduate students were selected
by their professor, to undertake a special project as their secondary
disciplines of history and languages would serve them well. Laying out sheeves
of documents, maps and an antique looking volume, they listened intently to a
fantastic story. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">“A
multiverse?”, “portals?” “Another time?” interjecting. Herman mentioned the
existence of multiverse was gaining acceptance, but travelling between spheres
was not possible and if so, would be extremely dangerous.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">Judging the
moment opportune, the professor opened the leather-bound book to reveal pages filled
with tightly written script in a language unknown. Between groupings of text
were hand-drawn maps displaying locations of centres of some importance. The
book certainly looked antique and rather than mention how old it was, the
professor made its authentication, dating and translation their first assignment.
The professor would hold his opinions and await their conclusions, university
resources would be available for translation and analyse of their findings. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Remaining sceptical
about the project, their research did produce some interesting results. Despite
the rough translation, the book was a personal journal written by a court official
surmised Gerard. Authenticating the leather binding found it to be at least
five hundred and fifty, possibly six hundred years old, however, the paper remained
a mystery, as its composition could not be traced to any known manufacturer. The
writing the computer had found, closely resembled an Elven language created by
writers of the fantasy genre. </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">“Ha”, “What
is next, Alice through the Looking Glass?’ spat Hermann. Gerard, eyes fixed on
the passage pointed out by Martin and began reading out loud, “1649 CE, Meeting
ministers; agenda items were discussed including the rebellion in northern
realms, HH advised monitoring events, but take no action.” Second line, “Await
general’s report on the campaign.”</span> </p><p class="MsoNormal">Absorbed with
the cryptic notations, Gerard proposed HH most likely meant His Highness. Advancing
to the next page appeared the general’s report. </p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"><b>Next Week, Civil Unrest </b><o:p></o:p></span></p>Timurilankhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12856114016218310524noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3844733894926798830.post-33627491241426601082021-08-08T00:29:00.000-07:002021-08-08T00:29:45.866-07:00Restoration of the gunpowder era Chinese<p>I had
thought about selling this collection of Imperial Chinese and Chinese Rebels.
Figures were collected from the 15mm Old Glory Boxer Rebellion; rebels are
exclusively Boxer figures while Imperial troops are conversions from regular
Chinese infantry. Soft caps were shaped to have a Mandarin hat appearance and
if I am not mistaken, the Imperial cavalry were originally Mongol irregulars
with lance replacing firearms.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The
decision to restore the collection was prompted by a search for suitable
opponents for the Melnibonean Elves. How they came into contact with the
Melniboné is the subject of a future chapter of their saga, but let us return
to the restoration project. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The
Rebels<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">The rebels
were entirely rebased which offered an opportunity to reorganise similarly
armed figures into proper elements. The bulk are classed as solid horde and are
fixed to a deeper base of 40mm x 40mm which certainly offsets them from their
faster counterpart. Elements based with a mix of spear and blade weapons are
now ‘warband’ types while elements armed entirely with halberd or sword, are
‘fast’ blade. Lastly, supporting the rebel infantry is a small group of cavalry
and light horse wearing yellow turbans. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;">A coat of
mat varnish improved their overall appearance from their original high gloss
coat. After rebasing 77 elements to 53, I judged that was enough work, but looking
at the photos I think black lining might improve their appearance.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

and ‘Moonbeam Road’ were first encountered while reading ‘Tales of the White
Wolf’, a compilation of Elric stories written by authors other than Michael
Moorcock. In Moorcock’s Elric of Melniboné, the existence of the multiverse is
suggested by the sudden appearance of characters from other worlds and other
times. Details are vague as to how this was done, but this opened a window of
opportunity for my own fantasy to explore the flight of the Melnibonean Elves to
another time and place following the cataclysm that befell their world.</span> </p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">The process
of reconstruction and the problems they would encounter is not unlike the
current project of refurbishment and adding new items for this project. Rather
than document its process in a disjointed manner I would build a story that
would animate the reader as it would myself.</span> </p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">The Melnibonean
Elves have now divested themselves from the former trappings to adapt a more flamboyant
style of 18th century Western Europe. Vestiges of their former world
can be seen, but on the whole, their transformation is helped by the further exploration
of a select number of elves who travelling to other times and places.</span> </p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Their journeys,
as we discover, gain them a formidable advantage over neighbouring kingdoms. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Who are the
neighbouring kingdoms and the story of the Great Migration is a subject to be presented
in entertaining installments? There are reasons for this. Firstly, the time
between each instalment will be sufficient to complete some facet of the
project and secondly, the added entertainment value provided by constructing
items for this project will help generate a story.</span> </p><p>

Melnibonean Empire developed is the research project of three graduate students.
Their research, meetings and correspondence, will become the subject of future
postings and if the presentation may seem at times chaotic, I too, am searching
