This game mat will have the most usage and therefore will require a little more thought with its construction. Together with the mat, new terrain items were also made to give the whole a consistent quality. For this mat, the ground colour needed to be darker and this was done by classic means, mixing Burnt Sienna and Green (earth colour).
The ground
Step one, a
base coat of white.
Step two,
the brown earth colour was made with mix of Burnt
Sienna and Green. Adding a small amount
of water, this was applied with a roller.
Three,
after drying overnight, I repeated the mix Burnt Sienna
and Green, added some Black to darken the shade, diluted this and applied
this sparingly with a sponge to bring variation to the ground.
Four, to
highlight the ground, I used Warm Grey, dilute
and apply in the same method as step three. Use a moist feathered sponge to
soften the edges of your paint.
The grass
Five, spray
the mat with diluted glue, spread an autumn mixture, Busch
7114, making several diagonal lines covering 30% of the game mat.
Six, after
drying overnight, tap the excess grass off before applied the next layer. Spray
the entire mat with diluted white glue and spread a spring mixture of grass, Busch 7111. Vary the density of grass application to
suggest undulating ground.
Depending
on the number of troops needed for a game, the area is easily adjusted. Four
panels (20cm x 80cm) were constructed so the field can be reduced from 160cm to
120cm or 80cm x 80cm battlefield; using the panels reduces set up time and protects the unused
areas.
