The Melnibonean restoration

Since the pandemic and lockdowns, I have painted and based my lead pile. In that same period of time, several collections were refurbished; due in part to an improved painting style and basing technique. The ancient and medieval collections have greatly benefited from the refurbishment project as did the Orc and Goblin collection. One collection however, has been remained confined to their boxes for twelve years, the 18th century Melnibonean Elves.

These were collected when ‘Lace Punk’ was in fashion and I had reread Michael Moorcock’s ‘Elric of Melnibone’. There are some unique items here, such as the rocket artillery, flame sticks (flame throwers) and the Sabretooth tigers. Inspired by the creative designs of the newer game movies, I thought it time to bring this collection to the next level.

Photo 1, an overview of the collection. The figures are 15mm Old Glory SYW French of the older period – sans turnback.

Photo 2, a close up of the rocket artillery and “flame sticks” or flame throwers. Both pieces were scratch-built with brass rod and tubing.

Photo 3, central in the photo are the sabretooth tigers flanked by Melnibonean wizards in pale blue coats.

Photo 4, a rear view of the collection. All figures will be placed on painting sticks which will mean new bases. More flags will be added and with different designs.

Photo 5, the work will be spread out over the next six months and will include new terrain items. To stimulate the construction of terrain items, I will use Wonderdraft to make maps of the archipelago.

Painting will be done in batches; two for the infantry, one of mounted figures and the last of artillery and other unique items. The time between batches can be used for gaming ancients, medieval or even musket era.

Great army well worth finishing off with your additions. I look forward to seeing the progress.
Who will their opponents be ?

The first 50 are nearly done, these lack powdered wigs.
An evening was spent deciding on uniform colours; this will visually separate guard, line and light units. Cavalry will follow a similar pattern.
The difficult part is saved for last; 19 flags.

Aside from a possible civil war, these will do for starters.
