Down the Moonbeam Road - Preface

Multiverse, an array of interconnected parallel universes, many-layered dimensions, spheres, and alternative worlds, spanning from the Big Bang to the End of Time and from Earth to faraway galaxies. - Wikipedia

The terms ‘multiverse’ and ‘Moonbeam Road’ were first encountered while reading ‘Tales of the White Wolf’, a compilation of Elric stories written by authors other than Michael Moorcock. In Moorcock’s Elric of Melniboné, the existence of the multiverse is suggested by the sudden appearance of characters from other worlds and other times. Details are vague as to how this was done, but this opened a window of opportunity for my own fantasy to explore the flight of the Melnibonean Elves to another time and place following the cataclysm that befell their world.

The process of reconstruction and the problems they would encounter is not unlike the current project of refurbishment and adding new items for this project. Rather than document its process in a disjointed manner I would build a story that would animate the reader as it would myself.

The Melnibonean Elves have now divested themselves from the former trappings to adapt a more flamboyant style of 18th century Western Europe. Vestiges of their former world can be seen, but on the whole, their transformation is helped by the further exploration of a select number of elves who travelling to other times and places.

Their journeys, as we discover, gain them a formidable advantage over neighbouring kingdoms.

Who are the neighbouring kingdoms and the story of the Great Migration is a subject to be presented in entertaining installments? There are reasons for this. Firstly, the time between each instalment will be sufficient to complete some facet of the project and secondly, the added entertainment value provided by constructing items for this project will help generate a story.

How the Melnibonean Empire developed is the research project of three graduate students. Their research, meetings and correspondence, will become the subject of future postings and if the presentation may seem at times chaotic, I too, am searching for answers.
